The International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare is one of the world’s largest conferences for healthcare professionals committed to improving patient care and safety.
The conference is jointly organised by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and BMJ. The ambition of both organisations is to improve healthcare and outcomes for patients and communities.
Since it first took place in 1996, over 3,000 healthcare professionals choose the International Forum every year as the place to learn, connect and plan their improvement strategies every year.
Speakers from all over the world gather to discuss topics such as applied data intelligence, innovation in healthcare delivery, the importance of regularly reviewing policies, and how behaviour affects patient care.
MOIC attended to talk about the role of an innovation centre in medicines optimisation, and our knowledge transfer/hosting links with over 20 countries.

Dr Geraldine Conlon-Bingham and Dr David Farren presented a poster today at ECCMID 2018 titled ‘Modelling the impact of antibiotic use and infection control on the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA).’
The conference, which is the 28th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, is being hosted in Madrid in Spain and is run by ESCMID – Europe’s leading society in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.
The world’s leading experts will join the most important congress in infectious diseases, infection control and clinical microbiology to present and discuss the latest results. The event boasts a comprehensive scientific programme with keynote lectures, symposia, oral and poster sessions as well as educational formats on parallel tracks. Thousands of industry professionals are set to attend over the course of the 3 day conference.

We were delighted to host a 1 hour session today at NICON18 conference to discuss medicines optimisation, and some of the great work we’ve been doing to date. It was brilliant to see so many faces from all walks of the HSC. Several hundred attended the event.
NICON is the voice of the organisations across the integrated health and social care system and is the only membership body for all the HSC.

Professor Michael Scott attended the 23rd Congress of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) event in Gothenburg Sweden this month to give a presentation on MOIC and our achievements to date.
The event themed ’Hospital pharmacists – show us what you can do’ was focused around dealing with the challenges of economic restrictions and increased demands in pharmacy within the hospital setting.
The largest congress for hospital pharmacy in Europe, achievements from multiple disciplines including Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Pharmacology and Bioethics were showcased in the hope of influencing decision makers, multidisciplinary team members and patients to increase demand for hospital pharmacists’ full engagement in the medication process.
An estimated 1,000 professionals attended the event.

Anita Hogg and Laura Downing represented MOIC at the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT) iQi one year on event.
The iQi (Innovation Quality Improvement) initiative was set up to formalise an approach to innovation and quality improvement (iQi) within Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland – which has patient safety at its heart, supported by service improvement to deliver excellent, integrated services in partnership with our community.
Attendees heard from Gill Smith, Innovation and Quality Improvement Lead, NHSCT, on the work iQi have been doing over the past year, and the plan to scale up some of the great initiatives staff within the various trusts in Northern Ireland have been working on.
Guest speaker, Dr John Harden, Clinical lead for Quality and Safety in Scotland talked about the pitfalls of incentivised systems, and how poor housing, social and economic deprivation is impacting life expectancy – and what the Scottish Government has done over the last ten years to improve Health & Social Care through improvement and innovation.
Staff within the HSC showcased the work they’re doing to innovate and improve processes, including smart technology within nursing homes, using virtual reality for anxiety treatment, and reducing post-surgery sickness rates.
The event was held on 21 March 2018 in Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey.
