Hosting & sharing good practice

The Integrated Medicines Management project, which commenced in 2000, highlighted the immense benefits of involving a clinical pharmacy team at hospital admission, inpatient stay and at discharge. The dissemination of these results at conferences and subsequent publication of the project results has been the catalyst for visitors to come to the Northern Health & Social Care Trust to observe the work first hand. Further developments in medicines optimisation have included the procurement process namely, STEPSelect, improved antimicrobial stewardship and the development of enabling technologies. Visitors have come to learn about these systems from throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Spain, the Netherlands, the Middle East and Australia.

A final year pharmacy resident from this institution in Madrid visits us each year to observe how we practice medicines optimisation on a day to day basis. He was impressed  by the amount of time spent on ‘face to face’ patient contact and how pharmacy is an integral part of the ward multidisciplinary team. Elena Álvaro arrived with us in February 2016 and plans to spend one of her four weeks learning more about antimicrobial stewardship and the enabling technology used.
