SHAPES
In 2019 the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared 2020-2030 the decade of Healthy Ageing. By 2050, it was projected that one in four people in the UK will be aged 65 years and over, currently 18% of the UK population is over 65.
The likelihood of experiencing multiple chronic and complex health conditions among those aged 65 years and over increases with age, therefore it is necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of our health and social care sectors.
SHAPES (Smart and Healthy Ageing through People Engaging in Supportive Systems) highlighted avenues to respond to this challenge:
- User led digital solutions centred around the home and community
- Focus on improving health, wellbeing and independence
- Empowering older people.
- SHAPES was delivered by an EU wide interdisciplinary consortium with blended expertise.
MOIC was one of the 36 partners from across Europe involved in the SHAPES Project. The project was funded by the EU under the smart and healthy living at home (Horizon 2020) work stream. This project was led by Professor MacLachlan, Director of the Assisted Living and Learning (ALL) Institute in Maynooth and was awarded a total of €21million (€572K was awarded to the NHSCT). In NI, MOIC led the Medicines Optimisation and Control pilot. The SHAPES project completed in December 2023.
