MOIC-Led Evaluation Enables Foyle Hospice to Enhance Palliative Care with HS21 Prescribing

June 17, 2025

MOIC proudly led the evaluation of a successful pathfinder at Foyle Hospice, implementing HS21 prescribing to allow community staff to directly prescribe medicines for palliative patients at home. This initiative, tested from September 2024 to March 2025, reduced waiting times for essential medications, eased GP workload, and supported patients receiving end-of-life care in their homes.
MOIC’s evaluation confirmed the pathfinder’s success in improving access to timely prescriptions via local pharmacies. Rachel Huey presented these impactful outcomes today, highlighting enhanced care delivery. As a result, a recommendation will be made to incrementally adopt HS21 prescribing into standard practice by all Hospice settings throughout Northern Ireland.
